Unpacking Tips and Advice

The moving truck has left and you're in your new home. But you're not alone. There are stacks of moving boxes as far as the eye can see. Whether you opted to save money when moving and rented a truck through a moving truck service, or opted not to include unpacking services to keep down your moving expenses, you've got your work cut out for you. But don't be discouraged. Once your basic necessities are out of the box, so to speak, you can take as long as you want to unpack, whether it's a week, a month, or longer.

Unpacking Tips - While the Movers are Unloading the Moving Truck

Put the furniture where it goes. If possible, have the movers set your furniture where you will be using it. When the furniture is in place, the moving boxes can be stacked around it, and you'll feel like you're home right from the start.

Set up your bed before the movers leave. Most people are pretty tired by the end of a busy moving day. If you have the movers set up your bed when they bring it in all you have to do is find your bedding box, hit the sack, and get a good night's sleep.

Check to make sure everything is there. Whether you've hired a moving company or have stored all or part of your furnishings with a facility that offers storage services, keep a moving checklist of your inventory to be sure every box is there. If anything is missing, the movers can check the truck or, with a long-distance move, the company can start a tracking request for you.

Check for damage. Most movers are very careful with your belongings, but even with the best moving companies, occasionally some damage may occur. Check every item as the movers bring your furniture into your new home. Look for missing feet, broken knobs, dents, scratches, or any other signs of damage so you can let the movers and your moving insurance company know right away.

Moving Tips - Unpacking After the Moving Company Has Left

Prioritize when you start unpacking moving boxes. Focus on your basic essentials. Unpack the kitchen first so you can make coffee and have meals. Tackle unpacking the bathroom next. Once your kitchen and bathroom are set up, you've got the basics taken care of.
